Assam Govt Order of Chatra Divas Celebration
On 22 March 2024, the Govt of Assam has released a notification regarding celebration of Birth Anniversary of Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma and requested all educational institutions to observe Chatra Divas on 31st March.
This occasion is to be celebrated in honour of Bodo leader, and institutions are urged to conduct the following activities:-
- All students and faculty members have been encouraged to offer a floral tribute to Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma on the morning of 31st March.
- To organize cultural programmes, Quiz, Essay Writing and Debate competitions etc among the students on the theme of “Chatra Divas”.

The Bodo community celebrates the birthday of Bodofa Upendranath Brahma as the FORAISA SAN throughout the country, mainly in Assam. Good news for the Bodo community, the Govt of Assam has decided to celebrate the birthday of Bodofa Upendranath Brahma on 31 every year as ‘Chatra Divas’. This was announced last year on 26 March 2024.
The 31st March 2024 will be the 2nd celebration of the Student day in Assam. This Chatra Divas is celebrated by all the stake holders across the state to honour the birthday of Upendra Nath Brahma, the visionary leader and founder of the All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU). The Students Day will be observed in all educational institutions as special homage to the student leader.
The Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma believes that this initiative will not only pay tribute to Bodafa Upendra Nath’s contributions but also inspire students to work for the betterment of their community.
Bodofa Upendra Nath, affectionately known as Bodofa (Father of the Bodos), dedicated his life to championing the rights and aspirations of the Bodo community, especially the youths. His never-ending efforts laid the foundation for the formation of ABSU in 1967, a pivotal organization that became the voice of Bodo students and played a crucial role in advocating for their rights, education, and socio-political empowerment.
By designating his birthday as Assam Students Day, the govt not only pays homage to Upendra Nath’s remarkable leadership but also underscores the importance of education and youth empowerment in shaping the future of Assam.

Who was Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma?
Upendra Nath Brahma was a Bodo social activist and the former president of the All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU). He was born on 31 March 1956, in a poor family in Bogari village of Kokrajhar district of Assam. He studied at Kokrajhar College and later he completed post graduate studies from Gauhati University.
Even from his early childhood, Upendra Nath Brahma showed his intelligence and demonstrated his great leadership quality. He knew the history of Assam extremely well. He was the vice-president of All Bodo Students Union between 1981–1983 and president from 1986.
He worked for the education and well-being of the Bodo community. Under his leadership, the ABSU agreed to include political issues as part of its agenda to give political maturity to the students. Bodafa Upendra Nath Brahma died in Mumbai on 1 May 1990 as a consequence of blood cancer at the age of just 34 years.
